What is a word scrambler?

A jumble maker for practice and play. A word scrambler takes a normal word or phrase and mixes its letters into a jumbled puzzle form. Teachers use scrambles for spelling and vocabulary practice, puzzle makers build them into worksheets and quizzes, and players set challenges for friends. The output doesn’t need to be a real word — that’s the point: someone else gets to unscramble it back.

How to use the word scrambler

Word Scrambler vs Word Unscrambler

Two sides of the same puzzle. The scrambler creates jumbled words; the word unscrambler solves them, turning mixed letters back into real words. If you want every real word hiding in a set of letters — or full rearrangements only — use the unscrambler or the anagram solver. Use the scrambler when you want to make the puzzle, not solve it.

Using extra letters

Decoy letters make scrambles harder. Add up to 5 extra letters and the tool generates a group for every length along the way — the original word plus each expanded length, every group labelled with the extra letters it uses. You can choose your own extra letters, up to the number you selected (maximum 5), and the tool draws any you leave out from a weighted pool of common English letters. Every group is capped at 15 letters, and the extras are listed per group so you keep the answer key.

Word scramble examples

The same tool at different settings. A basic scramble turns format into tromaf, puzzle into zlepuz, or teacher into hteacer. Preserve word spaces and word finder becomes rdow redfin — two scrambled words, one puzzle. Add four extra letters to format — say S, E, A and R — and you get ten-letter jumbles built from FORMAT plus the decoys, with the extra letters listed above the results.
