Why word length matters

Length is the first filter in almost every word puzzle.

Puzzles fix the length before you know a single letter: Wordle-style games run five, Text Twist runs six or seven, and every crossword slot tells you its length up front.

Short words are connectors — two- and three-letter words fit tight boards, rescue awkward racks, and make parallel plays possible.

Longer words score bigger: more tiles means more points, and in seven-tile games a full-rack play earns a bonus on top.

Anagram skill grows by length — rearranging six letters is a different habit from spotting the four-letter word hiding inside them, and practising by length trains both.
