Sometimes a rack gives up a word straight away. Other times you can stare at six letters and grow less certain that any of them belong together. That usually means the search needs to change, not the letters.
A six-letter rack invites you to hunt for the six-letter answer, and that hunt is often what keeps the rack closed. Break it into pieces you recognize instead. CASTER returns 116 words on our General English list, and only eight of them use all six letters. The other 108 are shorter. Spotting CAST or STAR first gives the rack some texture, and the longer answers tend to follow once the pieces are visible. Look for pieces. Whole words usually follow.
Difficulty comes from how the letters relate to each other, not simply from how many there are. AEINRST returns 256 words, including nine that use all seven letters. AEIOULR is also seven letters, and it returns 76 words with nothing longer than five. Both racks are the same size. Only one of them can build a long word. A set can be good at short words and poor at long ones. That is not a failure of the puzzle. It is what those letters can do.
The eye is surprisingly bad at this. SEEMED contains three Es, and after a few rearrangements it is easy to treat them as one general supply of E. The exact count is one of the strongest constraints you have. SEEMED returns 22 words in total, which is a small return for six letters, and the repetition is a major reason. A word needing four Es is impossible. A word needing two is fine. Repeats can also suggest shapes. Two Ls often sit together. Two Ss can close a word or appear inside it.
When nothing is appearing, replace the large question with a smaller one. Instead of asking what word seven letters make, ask whether there is a useful three-letter piece, which vowel has the most neighbors, or whether the rack contains a likely ending. STONE is difficult to miss. Once it appears, the rack can feel finished. The same five letters can also make NOTES, ONSET, TONES and SETON on the verified General English basis. Finding the first word proves that the letters cooperate. Finding the second usually means you have to stop seeing the first. Move the opening letter, separate the ending, or deliberately search one length shorter.

Counts on this page use our General English Word List. The same letters can return different totals when Extended English, North American or International is selected.
The letters are only half of the search. The Word List determines which spellings are eligible to appear.
General English is the balanced starting point, while Extended English is broader and the North American and International lists reflect different vocabulary sets. The same rack can therefore return different totals depending on the list selected. If a result appears in one list but not another, the letters have not changed; the vocabulary being searched has. Choose the list that best matches the reference or word-game context you are checking, then let the finder test the combinations.
